Last Updated: Dec 19, 2021 · Author: Anna Ando ·

Harry Potter cake ideas are what you need to relive the dream world of the amazing books by J.K. Rowling!

Harry Potter was the beginning of a magical and enchanting era. We learned about wizards, house elves, Hogwarts, met Ron and Hermione and learned about the value of friendship. We watched them grow and come into their own while we grew up with them.

The books and movie franchise are over now. However, we will forever fondly remember the fictional school of Hogwarts and the magic within its walls. There are many fun ways to commemorate and celebrate our beloved series. One of them is to bake a Harry Potter cake!

If you’re a Potterhead who just can’t get enough of the magical story, why not have a Potterhead dessert treat made for your birthday or another special occasion? It may just be the icing at the top that makes your event even more memorable.

Imagine how fun and nostalgic it will be to have a Harry Potter cake at your event. Here are some HP-themed cake design ideas for the Potterheads out there:

After all this time?? Always Cake

How many of us changed our minds about Severus Snape when he uttered that one magical word: “always?” Seventeen years since Lily Potter died, it was revealed in this scene how deeply he still loved and mourned for Lily. It was a scene that became even more touching when Snape showed how his Patronus Charm, his animal guardian, had come to match Lily’s — a symbol of his undying devotion for Harry’s mother.

If you’re a romantic who was touched by this scene, have a wedding or anniversary dessert with the words “After all this time? Always” etched in icing or as a topper. It’s a simple yet eloquent Harry Potter cake to express your fandom and the depth of your love for your significant other.

Cool Quidditch Cake With Harry, Hermione, and Ron

Potterheads like us have come to love this game that’s played while mounted on a broomstick. Who remembers cheering their favourite Quidditch teams on while waiting for Harry to find the snitch and win the trophy?

Remember those good old times by having a cool Quidditch cake. Create a Quidditch field, add M&M’s for spectators, and edible cutouts or fondant of Harry, Hermione, and Ron.

Spells Book Birthday ‘Harry Potter’ Cake

Remember the dramatic moment when Snape turned to the class and asked them to turn their spellbooks to page 394? It was such a memorable scene in HP and the Prisoner of Azkaban that we have to include it in our list of great dessert designs.

Recreate Harry’s book of spells or the Monster Book of Monsters or even the legendary advanced potion-making book signed by the half-blood prince. Give it the finishing touch by adding his wand resting on top of the book.

Use fondant icing and coffee granules to write on the Harry Potter cake or add gold and bronze touches to make it even more realistic. The possibilities for the muggle-born are never-ending!

Sweet Chocolate Hedwig Cake

Let’s face it, we all wish we had a Hedwig in our lives. We can’t have snowy pet owls as close companions. However, we can still pay tribute to the friendship, loyalty, and support Hedwig embodied by having a Hedwig cake design.

Who can resist a dessert pastry covered in vanilla buttercream with fondant accents or a birdcage with Hedwig in it? Definitely not us!

You can even add some books and his iconic glasses on top of the Harry Potter cake. It’s bound to be 100% Hedwig approved.

Harry Potter Sorting Hat Cake

Ah yes, the Sorting hat. It’s a cool feature from the HP world and the backbone of the sorting system at Hogwarts. The inner monologues, the one-sided conversations, oh boy, can that hat talk.

Put the layers on top of each other until you have the right height and carve it into the shape of the Sorting Hat. Place a fondant sheet on top and carefully mould it to achieve a closer resemblance. Create indentations with your knuckles for the eyes and use a toothpick to add smaller details to your Harry Potter cake.

If someone you love has a favourite Hogwarts House, you can add it to your design by creating one of the Hogwarts houses and putting the Sorting Hat on top of it.

Fun fact: Have you played the online Harry Potter House Quiz? If you haven’t already, take this fun quiz to find out if you would’ve been part of Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff, or Ravenclaw.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone Birthday Cake

HP and the Sorcerer’s Stone is where our journey and love for JK Rowling’s magical realm began. In the movie, Hagrid breaks into the cottage where Harry and his adoptive parents, the Dursleys, were staying. While the parents and their son Dudley were trembling in fear, Hagrid hands him a birthday cake and apologizes that he may have sat on it.

On the top surface in awkward green lettering against a pink background, the treat reads, “Happee birthdae, Harry.” The dessert may have been sloppily put together but it was endearing to see a giant who’s supposedly twice as tall as the average man bake a birthday treat for a boy who’d just turned 11.

If you love this scene as much as we do, a Harry Potter cake like this is an excellent and creative way of commemorating the HP franchise and the huge but adorable Hagrid.

Coolest Monster Book of Monsters Cake

Hagrid’s first year as a teacher sure made its mark, especially when he assigned the third year students the Monster Book of Monsters. The students’ handling of the book and their various encounters with its snapping growling behaviour were among the most memorable moments in the movies.

Why not level up your birthday celebration with a Monster Book of Monsters Harry Potter cake? This is a perfect design for pastry designers who love working with different textures. Since the Book of Monsters is covered in fur with beady eyes on top and gums with pointed teeth, it’ll be quite a challenge with impressive results if you get it right.

Amazing Hagrid’s Hut Birthday Harry Potter Cake

Hagrid’s hut is captured in many scenes throughout the movie series. In it, our favourite trio of friends would often be seen spending time together. There’s a touch of nostalgia to this design since the hut doesn’t survive the end of the series.

Tint and roll the fondant the night before and pay close attention to the roof tiles’ detailing, cutting them in small rectangles. Don’t forget to add the finer details like the door. You can decorate the space around the cottage with moss, brick, woodwork, and pumpkins.

Coolest Hogwarts Castle Harry Potter Cake

What is an HP-themed celebration if there aren’t memorabilia of Hogwarts Castle somewhere?

To recreate an edible Hogwarts Castle, bake 3 round sponge ones with cones for the towers. Be careful while icing them as they can easily crumble. Use fondant to create the illusion of bricks and attach skewers to keep the cones attached firmly to the base. Create an illusion of water around the castle since Hogwarts is surrounded by water.

Nothing would make a better centrepiece than this Hogwarts castle. You can even add small characters making their way through the gates to spice things up.

There are so many ways to incorporate the magical theme into your Harry Potter cakes. These ideas are a great source of inspiration that you can add your own elements. Customization never hurt anybody, unless you’re working on potions with Snape!
