Strawberry matcha smoothie combines the natural sweetness of strawberries with earthy green tea to make a creamy drink. It’s made of strawberries, Japanese green tea powder, and milk.
Our no-added sugar recipe is an excellent alternative to overly sweetened drinks. Our strawberry matcha smoothie recipe doesn't need any bananas or yoghurt. We also use a plant-based alternative, like soy or oat milk, to lighten the overall texture while keeping it low-calorie.
Besides, we also love making this smoothie into a breakfast bowl all the time. Our easy recipe brings joy to our mornings, and we're sure it will bring the same for you, too.

Strawberry Matcha Smoothie Ingredients
To make this drink, you need fresh strawberries, green tea powder, and plant-based milk.
Strawberry's natural sweetness and sourness perfectly balance the bitterness of the green tea powder. Beyond this trio of ingredients, an array of variations emerges. However, we recommend sticking to the basics and keeping our recipe simple.
Why? For one, these three ingredients create a perfect balance. The sweet acidity of the strawberries balances out the grassy green tea flavour and the richness of nut milk. In addition, they look great together. You will experience a deep red fruit layer and a brilliant Japanese green tea against a creamy off-white background.
Matcha
While using ceremonial-grade green tea powder is better, it's necessary for our recipe. As you mix the green tea layer with the frozen smoothie layer, it becomes hard to distinguish the subtle flavour and texture differences between the types o fgreen tea grade. Therefore, using culinary green tea powder is sufficient for our recipe.
Milk
Cow's milk will make this drink creamier and thicker, so go for that if you prefer. However, we also like using plant milk for the smoothie as it makes it lighter and blends nicely for an iced, cool drink. While creamy and delicious, the fattiness of dairy milk may make the drink heavy.
On the other hand, using a smooth plant-based alternative such as soy, oat, almond, or cashew milk works well. Plant-based milk has a lighter consistency and helps to smoothen the texture of the frozen strawberry mix.
However, we recommend avoiding coconut milk for our recipe as it, too, has a heavy consistency similar to regular dairy.
How To Make A Strawberry Matcha Smoothie with Layers
Ultimately, the best aspect of our strawberry matcha smoothie recipe is that you can make a great-tasting, fancy-looking, healthy drink in just a few easy steps. All you need is to blend the ingredients, chill, and pour the mixture into a glass.
Looking for the cafe-style, two-layer, pink-and-green effect? Skip the long lines at your local coffee shop and follow these simple instructions to wow your family and friends:
- Blend the bottom layer of ingredients (frozen strawberries) until smooth.
- Pour the mixture into a glass carefully without getting it on the sides. Freeze for at least 10-30 minutes to thicken the texture.
- Blend or whisk the matcha and nut milk. We prefer to mix using a chasen (bamboo whisk), but it does not matter if all the matcha dissolves.
- Take out your strawberry mixture and gently pour the green mixture on top.
As the frozen fruit layer is denser, the matcha milk will not mix with it immediately when you pour it over. However, making this drink into a three-layer beverage is slightly more complex.
If you want to make it into a 3-layer drink, pour the frozen strawberry layer at the bottom, then ice, then whole dairy milk, and finally, a green tea layer at the top. However, it turns out less like a smoothie as you will need to add water to whisk the green tea powder, and the added ice will water down the drink over time.
